Our Silent Language

Synchronization and emotional attunement

Underneath all our verbal language there is a flow of deeper connection. These processes of  synchronization, emotional attunement, and reattunement are vital for deeper communication, emotional bonding, and the overall health of our relationships.

Synchronization often occurs subconsciously. When people engage in conversation, they naturally tend to align their speech rates, tone of voice, and gestures. Synchronization is our first ‘language’. We begin to use it from birth.

Emotional attunement grows out of this synchronisation process. It is the ability to accurately perceive and respond to the emotions of others. In parent-child relationships, emotional attunement is crucial for secure attachment. In adult relationships, emotional attunement enhances intimacy and trust.

Misattunements and conflicts are inevitable in any relationship. When individuals attune to each other's emotional states, they can navigate conflicts more effectively and support each other through challenges, reinforcing the resilience of the relationship. Reattunement is the process of recognizing and repairing these disconnections. This process not only repairs the immediate disconnection but also strengthens the relational bond by demonstrating a commitment to mutual understanding and respect. It requires patience and a willingness to be vulnerable, as well as the courage to admit when one has been wrong or insensitive.

In this training, we will work with:

  • Developmental theory of synchronisation, attunement and reattunement
  • Peer group discussions about the theory
  • Plenum discussion
  • Peer exercises to explore synchronisation, attunement and reattunement
  • Demonstration therapy
  • Supervision
  • Meditative exercises
